I am one of the four partners at Stipo.
I am involved in various strategic projects and lead
training courses. I connect different disciplines, interests and partners with each other, as well as combining prospective urban strategies to various design and cultural, economic and social approaches.
My interests lie in complex urban development debates, regeneration, cultural development, urban creativity, international inspiration, city squares and parks, new urban concept development and vision and strategy development plans.
2011: Examples of projects I have been able to apply these interests in:
• Inner-city plinth strategy Rotterdam: Project leader in a project involving dS+V, OBR, Bureau Binnenstad and various stakeholders in and around the inner-city.
• ‘Natural neighbourhood renewal': setting up a network and community of practice in collaboration with KEI, Bureau 77, Nieuwe Maan, GenP, Trancity.
• Assisting neighbourhood and town development visions for the local authority in Roosendaal, inhabitants, housing associations and neighbourhood partners, in accordance to the natural neighbourhood renewal approach.
• Art Factory incubator strategies, Bureau Broedplaatsen Amsterdam: Research, advice and coalition forming with market leaders
• Plinth strategy Weesperstraat, Amsterdam (Central District)
• Advice for the ‘100% Mode' concept for Arnhem Klarendal, an assignment for the government and local authority in Arnhem.
• Leading training courses for various urban training strategies and project leader for several different International knowledge exchange events
2009-2010
• Museumplein / Museum Quarter Vision and Masterplan: Projectleader for the Central District Amsterdam and South District, alongside the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum and Concertgebouw.
• Training partner for Plein 40/45, City District New-West, Amsterdam
• Art and Culture Vision for City District Amsterdam South, in collaboration with its cultural partners.
• Strategy and conference ‘Voor Rotterdam, Programmasturing', for dS+V Rotterdam
• Presentations and publications, such as the N-Reeks (KEI-Centrum) about ‘Vernieuwen tussen Orde en Chaos' (Renewal between Order and Chaos)
• Senior project leader social-spatial urban vision in Inverdam West, for the Parteon Housing Association, ZVH and the local authority Zaanstad.
• Co-founder of Inspiring Cities (International network for city and culture) and Stadlente: a network for ‘working on the sunny side of the city'.
2008 - 2009
Stipo now has two offices: in Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Stipo has grown into an interdisciplinary team for urban development, active on all scale levels. Jeroen becomes a partner at Stipo and several other people join Stipo to strengthen our team, at Junior, Intermediate and Senior level. An increasingly (conscious) addition to our disciplines and quality of work. I am the founder of the Olympic Area Coalition in Amsterdam, with partners such as NOC*NSF, Rietveld, DRO and Zuidas and the senior project leader Stadionplein (deisgned by O.M.A.).
2008
We've always shared knowledge, but from now on we'll be explicitly calling Stipo the Knowledge Team for Urban Development. We are placing all our work under the Creative Commons Licence to safeguard the free spread of our knowledge. The team is growing and providing inspiration, Jeroen has joined us as a partner, Suzanne, Saskia, Sander, Hendrike and Marco have strengthened the ranks. Contributing a new quality and discipline every time.
My role: I help to run the team and am also involved in innovative strategic projects. I bring together different scale levels, disciplines, interests and partners, and intertwine opportunity-driven spatial strategy with culture, economy and quality of life. A strong public domain, distinctive potential , enduring qualities: that is what drove me in 1993 and that is what drives me still.
Examples:
The vision of the Museum Square in Amsterdam with cultural institutions and investors; Olympic Area Coalition with partners like the National Olympic Committee*Dutch Sports Confederation, Rietveld, dRO and the Southern Axis; courses in urban strategy and international knowledge exchanges. Other enjoyable things: lectures and publications, like the recent N series 14 of the KEI Centre about ‘Innovation between Order and Chaos'. I am also one of the founders of Stadslente, the network for working on the sunny side of the city.
2006
One of the founders of ErasmusPC, an international network for city and culture, a place for free exchanges via the web and in the salons, for picking up and passing on inspiration. Driven by a passion for the city.
For Stipo, among others, a lot of energy goes into a very high-quality design for the Stadionplein in Amsterdam, and a social vision for the centre of Zaanstad. Marijke, Yvonne, Jan and Rob join the team.
2005
Managing director and senior project manager for a series of exciting projects and courses. Social and physical, strategy and urban regeneration, training, Amsterdam, Enschede Zuid, ReUrbA. Publications about innovative approach to urban development. Combinations of clients, housing corporations, investors, institutions.
2000
A deliberate decision to enlarge the team steadily. On each occasion, a review to see which qualities we still lack. 2001 is a tough year, with the death of Geer, but I carry on with Stipo, as was his passionate wish. I ask Kees and Arie to come on board as partners. In 2003, my first son is born, followed by my second two years later.
1995
The University of Amsterdam decides to put a stop to externally financed research. Geer and I want to take the Stipo approach further and decide to branch out on our own. A consultancy firm with principles: the wish to help clients in ways that matter, never to repeat ourselves, to share knowledge and to go to work with a smile on our faces. Strategic assignments and courses for municipal authorities, regional and provincial authorities. Multi-disciplinary, in the Netherlands and on the international stage.
1993
University of Amsterdam research programme for public space. Great projects through Stipo at the University of Amsterdam: Drechtoevers Master Plan, Spatial Design of Hoeksche Waard. I work part-time for the Watergraafsmeer district, am proud of Park Frankendael with the restaurant De Kas.
1992
I meet my future wife, Réka. In 1992, we hitchhike to Hungary and back and I work on a research project in Budapest. In 1993, we move to Amsterdam.
1988
Back to Amsterdam, Planology at the University of Amsterdam with the city as the central focus and all sorts of moves into languages, tourism, marketing. Founder/revivor of the Het Groene Hart student association. Graduate work: Stipo, with Geer Koopmans.
1970
Born in Kampen. Move to Amsterdam a year later. And then, another three years later, to the overspill town of Bovenkarspel. My parents follow the overspill town policy. I already miss the city.
